The organisation was formed in 2002, and includes individuals and businesses with lengthy experience in general business consultancy or sector development and who were committed to fostering and developing Maori commercial interests. It was established with one aim in mind: to provide an independent and neutral vehicle to help build Maori entrepreneurship in a way that maintained the tino rangatiratanga of the businessperson and/or business whanau. Members of Tautoko consortium work in this area because it is their passion and because the Tautoko consortium allows them to contribute in a meaningful way to the renaissance of Maori entrepreneurship. We have a proven delivery model that works particularly well in the area of capability building and business mentoring. The core principle of this model is a collaborative approach to work, using the consortium as a vehicle to manage collaboration on a fit-for-purpose basis. Once client needs have been agreed upon, we design a development plan and assemble a team of experts to work with the business. We invariably bring in a range of funded assistance programmes in order to gain leverage off all the support that is available to the business, and to ensure that they have continued support once our own engagement has been completed.
